David Gutkin

Guitarist and musicology student, David Gutkin has largely devoted his efforts towards exploring and championing new music. He appeared as a guest artist at the 2006 Tanglewood Center's Festival of Contemporary Music. In 2007 David, with friends/colleagues, premiered Patricio da Silva's Imaginary Folk-Tunes and Jennifer Logan's Quartet at New England Conservatory. This season he will record an album of premieres including works by da Silva and Logan, as well as a work by Mohammed Fairouz. This summer, 2008, David will perform at Tanglewood with the Mark Morris Dance Company.

As a writer David Gutkin been has published in Guitar Review (on the Boston Guitar Festival), Society News (Society for New Music Newsletter- interview with American soprano Neva Pilgrim), The Bard Observer, (reviewing recordings of contemporary music), and the New England Conservatory student newspaper, (on visual arts and music).

David completed his undergraduate studies at New England Conservatory with a double degree in guitar performance, under Eliot Fisk, and music history. His undergraduate thesis is a Derridean-inspired analysis of the rhetoric and music (Stuctures Ia) of Pierre Boulez. David will continue his musicological studies as a graduate student at Columbia University beginning Fall 2008.
