Robert Mayes

Robert Mayes, a native of Jacksonville, North Carolina, currently attends the Juilliard School, where he is pursuing a Master of Music degree under the tutelage of David Soyer, cellist of the Guarneri String Quartet. He is the recipient of the E. & W. Naumburg Scholarship at Juilliard. He received his Bachelor of music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he was the recipient of the Frances O. and Elizabeth Hunnewell Scholarship. Robert is a graduate of the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, where he was the first recipient of the Benjamin Zander Scholarship.
Recently, Robert has appeared at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall’s Weil Recital Hall and Zankel Hall, The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Jordan Hall, and Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre. Robert has been a participant in numerous music festivals throughout the United States including: Perlman Music Program, Heifetz International Music Institute, Eastern Music Festival, and Interlochen. Robert was selected to represent the state of North Carolina as the principal cellist of the National Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Music Institute in Washington DC.
Mr. Mayes has participated in masterclasses and studied with such esteemed musicians as Itzhak Perlman, Paul Katz, Bernard Greenhouse, Donald Weilerstein, Andres Diaz, Andre Emelianoff, The Borromeo String Quartet, James Buswell, Matt Haimovitz, Timothy Eddy, Bonnie Hampton, Gunther Schuller, Pamela Frank, Bruce Brubaker, John Williams, and numerous others. Robert plays on a 19th century Barbe cello on loan to him from the Carlsen Cello Foundation.
